Since last week, I've spotted 3 turtles, on 3 different streets. The first 2, I stopped and set them off the road in the direction they were headed, luckily, woodsy and out in the country.
I stepped out to get my mail and saw a round shape up the street that looked like a turtle. I walked up to see what it was, and sure enough, it was a turtle. It was moving away from new neighbors with dogs, toward a neighbor who would probably live on his lawn tractor if he could. I didn't want to risk setting the turtle in his yard, so I brought it in. I won't keep it. I don't know how safe it would be a little further up the street, where there is a small tract of trees and brush. Or if that is too far from its territory.
The turtle is uninjured, very lively. I gave it some water and a bit of fresh peach. And some leaves while I figure out what to do. I haven't seen a box turtle for years, and I'm really happy to see so many in such a short span of time. All different sizes, too.
On the upside, maybe I'll pass the eyesight part of my drivers' license renewal test next week

(17,005 posts)and deer yesterday. My local daughter spotted a bobcat near her house. She thinks it got 2 of their chickens, so they aren't letting the chickens out for free-range. She said the bobcat is pretty sneaky, and the chickens are unaware of the danger.
On the lighter side, I've had baby squirrels and rabbits in my yard this year. So cute!

(131,053 posts)We kept one for years, in an aquarium in daughter's room. Weekends, we put him/her downstairs in large wooden open-top container, with water container; weekdays, brought him/her up to aquarium with water and kale.

(17,005 posts)I was with my granddaughter when we saw one last week. She said that you have to have a permit. They had one in their classroom, so she knew about the paper the teacher had to fill out. She said the kids voted to set it free.
I picked one up in November 1 year, very iffy weather in s.e. Ohio. I kept it all winter, and it did fine. My daughter has several wild turtles living in her yard. She keeps lows dishes of water out for them. She got a video of one of the turtles bookin it up the drive to get some kibble she put out for the feral cats. I didn't know a turtle could move that fast! lol

(23,723 posts)What do you do if you find a box turtle in your yard?
DO NOT TAKE IT HOME. DO NOT RELOCATE the turtle. Box turtles have a homing instinct and they will try to get back to the area they came from. If you move it far from it's home you will cause it to likely get killed trying to get back to it's home, so leave it in the area found, do not bring it to a nicer park.

(17,005 posts)The direction from where it is coming has 2 new dogs in the yard. The direction where is it going is a neighbor that mows often. And weedwhips, and operates other small motor devices. This year, he trimmed the edge of the woods where I should put the turtle. It is church night, and people will be driving up the street right where I saw this turtle. I'm planning to set it in the trees and brush just above where I saw it, but I will probably keep it overnight, and put it out tomorrow when there is less traffic.
I set a turtle out of my daughter's drive yesterday, in the direction it was headed, and darned if the mowing company didn't come by in the afternoon. I've worried all day that I put it in harm's way, but I didn't want to leave it in the drive, which is actually more like a road.
Thanks for the link.
