Me: A sip of my dear departed aunt Fayes Schlitz. I was about five or six. She also let me take a puff of her Lucky Strike.

(5,184 posts)Poured it out of my mom's bottle, made up the difference with water, which she always added to it anyway, then let the ice melt so it was even more watered down by the end of a glass of it.

(34,137 posts)Maybe a splash of vanilla. Mom only served it with mincemeat pie and the great aunt I am named after loved both. Mom never told her the recipe since great aunt was a tea totaler.
If you're talking straight booze, Mom & Dad would have martinis every night and when we were little let us have a sip if we begged. Of course, at that young age none of us kids liked it. In fact, I never developed a taste for martinis. I think the hard sauce set me up since my favorite drink in college was cuba libre - rum & coke with a bit of lime.

(34,137 posts)Mom had to learn to make mincemeat pie since it was not part of her Alabama heritage. But she was a wonderful cook - and the hard sauce made just about anything taste better.
Dad's family that was from Upper Peninsula Michigan were the ones that were used to mincemeat pie. I am not sure if it came from my Welsh great grandfather, his wife's Scots Canadian family, or from my grandmother's New York roots. Heck, the Cornish pasties my mother had to learn to make were not a family thing but learned from the miners in the UP.

I was painfully shy. Alcohol allowed me to connect for a few minutes. I miss it but am fully aware I no longer drink for fun... I drink to forget horrible trauma when i was 30+ and have no power over alcohol.

My Mom said I turned beet red and screamed.
I was ok, but the alcohol in the drink sure did burn.

(4,993 posts)all my Grandpa's German brothers and sisters. I was very young, like 5 or 6, and I was so shocked at the taste (expecting it to be sweet like soda pop) that I grimaced, the beer went up my nose, and all the men who were sitting around my Dad enjoying their cold beers on that hot Sunday afternoon had a good laugh. The experience cured me from every wanting to drink alcoholic beverages, and I still don't to this day....

To this day I will refuse to join in on 'taking a shot' for ANY reason!

(32,767 posts)Either it was my Grandpa giving us grandchildren a small glass of wine (maybe 3 ounces) at a family Sunday dinner. Or it was my Dad letting me have a sip of his beer, which was probably a Busch Bavarian.
Actually all of us kids used to fight over who would get to bring Dad's beer, because the lucky winner would get a sip of beer. There were always a lot of kids willing to do this - I was the oldest of 9.

(29,722 posts)and my sister and I (aged 7 and 4) were darlings of the bride and groom so we were allowed to freely intermingle with all the wedding guests. My mother told the waiter we could have a tiny amount in a glass. She neglected to say only one glass, so the waiter continued to fill our glasses only that tiny amount multiple times. I don't remember if there was a hangover involved or just lots of sleep.

Didnt work too well. One of those times I took a sip, probably 9 or 10. I didnt like it and didnt acquire a taste for beer till I got out of HS.

(14,934 posts)much alcohol tastes "industrial" to me so there's a lot I've never tried.
I like black, or white russians, Pina colada, champagne, white wine, rose, maybe a dry red. The only beers I ever liked were ?Xing Zhao, and a Samuel Addams Lite Summer Ale.
But now with meds can only have a sip or two here and there. But it was fun while it lasted.
