I thought I was losing my sense of taste and I panicked.

So my husband comes home to tell me that the guy he was working with at Home Depot caught Covid and died. Apparently, he was an anti-vaxxer. This news is on top of the news that my young thirty-something friends are catching it, and they're panicking. One of them is in the hospital, and the Covid family keeps saying they're feeling better, then something sets them back.

So I'm trying to keep busy doing a project and decide to stop for a snack. I take a bite of an apple, a Hero, and I think, God this tastes awful. So I went for some blueberry yogurt and I thought, Shit, this is horrible, too. And then it comes to me. I'm losing my sense of taste! So now I'm halfway through a chocolate bar. Good news, I can taste it fine.

I might have to keep checking throughout the day.

I lost it slowly. MRI no answers. Believe me you will notice. I never got any nasty smells or taste, it just slowly faded completely. It sucks.

Apparently, there are some nasal sprays which contain zinc, and these seem to have the *opposite* of the desired effect -- stick to internal zinc supplements !

I don't think that indicates a loss of taste.

Wouldn't a loss of taste be no taste?

I've had loss of sense of smell twice in the past 10 years, both times associated with flu/sinus infections (and both prior to 2019 - so no, not because of COVID-19). In both instances it resolved in a few days.

My litmus test was in the shower. If I couldn't smell the shampoo on my hand when I brought it up to my nose, I probably wasn't going to be able to smell anything.

But I have heard/read tales of people whose sense of smell seemed to just go haywire like that...

Do you have a lawn butt in your front yard?

A fountain featuring a peeing cherub?

If none of the above, you're probably OK.
