Remember vicks vapor rub and mercurochrome that was the go to in youth

Our sixteen year old smells of Vick vapor rub , fever sore throat playing it by ear he’s vaccinated. Other day fishing the eleven year old cut his finger with a hook. In the boat I said just put some mercurochrome on it you’ll be fine kiddo.

I can find Vick's if I look carefully, but I haven't seen mercurochrome for maybe 20 years. I use different brands of antiseptic salves, but the original red stingy one - haven't seen it in a long time. Used to get it when my son was growing up.

It did not burn.

It worked wonders on drying up scabs.

I always had red scabs (Mercurochrome) on my knees growing up.

Merthiolate is the one that burned.

They are the same color and come in the same kind of bottles with the same kind of applicator.

They are both still available but Mercurochrome is hard to find.

It is available on Amazon.

It doesn’t kill bacteria, it’s red color makes it hard to detect infection and it has mercury in it.

On 19 October 1998, citing potential for mercury poisoning, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reclassified merbromin from "generally recognized as safe" to "untested," effectively halting its distribution within the United States.[1] Sales were subsequently halted in Brazil (2001), Germany (2003),[2] and France (2006).[3][better source needed] It is readily available in most other countries.[citation needed]

It tasted like black licorice and I love black licorice.

It worked great on stopping bellyaches (stomach pains).

I don't remember it having an applicator.

It was taken by the spoonful.

Perhaps not an applicator (as such), but just the lower extended glass portion of the bottle stopper? Mom would rub a bit of the liquid on my incoming teeth...or so I recall from the days before television.

Still have an empty bottle in the medicine cabinet, glass with glass eyedropper.

…thru. In a cedar chest in the finished basement, I found a bottle of paregoric that must be decades old - may have belonged to my late grandmother. There was one other medication in there with her name on it. She died in 1982.

The bottle isn’t brown, but the liquid inside is - very clear, with a tiny bit of sediment.

The label is pretty interesting:

ANHYDROUS MORPHINE .035 TO .045 GM IN 100 CC ALCOHOL. 43 TO 46% BY VOLUME.

WARNING - May be habit forming.

DOSE - Infants, 3 days 1 drop; 1 week, 2 drops; 1 month; 3 drops; 1 yr; 6 drops; 5 yr; 20 drops. Adults a teaspoonful.

I’ve kept it as an interesting bit of pharmaceutical history.

when I got a bad cold. When I got stomach flu I was given 7-Up, and sometimes milk-toast (which I also hated). Oddly, I liked the smell of Mercurochrome. I don't think you can buy it any more, at least the original version, which had mercury in it and stained everything it touched.

My mother loved it, and said it made her feel better when she was a child. She’d make me eat it because she had liked it, even tho it made me want to puke. I could never understand why my opinion on it didn’t matter.
