the Lansing State Journal after school. Snow, wing or rain, I had to do it. No mom or dad around to drive me. About 85 homes. When I drive around there now, I remember where I was suppose to leave the paper. 1961.

My parents owned and operated a dry cleaners and laundry. I was delivering just as soon as I could keep the long bags from dragging on the ground. About 10 years old. I received the magnificent sum of $5.00 per week!

(Not counting my paper route from age 12-15) To create hybrids for the next year’s planting, seed companies would plant four rows of one variety, then one row of the other variety. The four rows were the females and to prevent them fertilizing themselves, their tops had to be pulled out so only the male rows produced pollen. $.90/hour.

From ninth grade to Senior year.

Perfect fit for an early riser like me. Got up, completed my route. Came back with enough time to nap for a couple of hours. Had breakfast and coffee while reading my own copy of the paper front to back, then went to school.

Solidified my work ethic and put some spending money in my pocket.

Any Republican who says Democrats don’t like to work for a living better be willing to listen to me talk about working three jobs throughout high school. Newspaper delivery in the mornings, McDonald’s after school, and caddying golf on the weekends.

It’s because I know the value of work, and never had a trust fund that I’m a Democrat and not a Republican…
