Mattress recommendation

Sorry for posting this here. I looked at all the forums and couldn't find one for the question I have.

I tend to sleep a little on the warm side. My current mattress has foam, which tends to hold in warmth. I'm looking for a no-foam mattress.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a mattress that has no foam?

2. Waterbed ?

I slept on a few over the years, some better than others
The last one I owned went cold, so I figured the heater had quit
It had, which I found upon draining and discovered water leaking out of it, luckily caught by the liner … but the heater had shorted, started burning a hole in the bottom frame which burned the hole in the mattress which put out the fire 😳
I’m lucky I wasn’t fried in the process … anyway that was my last waterbed …

So this isn’t exactly a rec for a waterbed either

3. You might try a latex topper.

If it has an "open-flow aircell design" (i.e., is perforated), it allows for better air circulation. They're also super durable. I've been sleeping on one for a few years now, and it's still as resilient as when it was new. You can also get latex mattresses, of course, but you may find that a topper is enough -- and you wouldn't have to replace your old mattress with a new one that may not work for you.

One downside: latex is really "springy" -- it sinks in enough to be comfortable when you're lying on it, but if you like that body-hugging "wet sand" feel of memory foam, you're not going to get that with latex. It also transfers movement much more than memory foam, too, so if you're at all a light sleeper you may wake up every time your sleeping partner shifts position or gets out of bed. We've learned to move v-e-r-y slowly and carefully, so that's less of a problem than it might be for some.

Mattress shopping! I'd rather get a tooth pulled. I try not to remember all the times I've "tested" a mattress under buzzing fluorescent light tubes with customers and sales people milling around me. And I *really* try not to remember the times we made an expensive incorrect choice.

In my younger days, I could sleep on pretty much anything, but as I slouch toward my Golden Years the process is not so simple. I'm sure we've spent enough on mattresses and toppers in the past 20 years to buy a pretty decent used car. Nice problem to have, I guess -- not everybody has the option to be choosy.

4. Check out a Purple mattress topper

It's an eggcrate-like grid. I don't have the mattress, but do have a seat cushion and it's very nice.

5. Go to a chain showroom. In canada we have Sleep Country. I went

in and asked for something firm and cool and they had three options for me to try. Wanting a cool mattress is a well known request. A chain is going to have options (plus sometimes they will take your old mattress away) plus they are not going to lie as they have a brand to protect. Supply chains are organized. They are not winging it with big flash purchases of mattresses from china they don't know about and they want to get rid of.

7. All I can say is

do a lot of research.
You might be able to solve your problem by using a wool filled topper. Cotton toppers will get very hard over time but wool does not.

I got a hybrid, springs/some foam and it is working well. There is a Zinus brand on Amazon and the ones made in Italy are great for no off-gassing of chemicals. It had no odor when I opened the box. That is a big deal because you will be exposed to whatever chemicals are used for quite awhile. Europe has higher standards for safety than does the US.

Another mattress I got about the same time was horrible for chemical smells. It was made in the US (Washington actually) and I had to leave it in the hallway to off-gas for weeks - and then it still smelled of chemicals.

8. I also sleep warm

But memory foam really works for my arthritic joints and back. A good, thick 100% cotton mattress pad (cotton top with cotton padding) helps a lot.

I sleep hot but love my foam too much. I will never own a useless "real" mattress again. I just use a cotton mattress cover, top sheet no blanket and a fan.
