If you're conscious and aware that you're dying, you won't know that you're dead when you die.* There won't be any -
Huh. I'm dead.
Thoughts?
*That is, in my way of thinking about death. YMMV

And, maybe not. Maybe we are just dead. The end.

Whenever I used to drive long distances, I had to wash the bugs off my windshield.
Not anymore. Insect populations are being decimated.
Dead and gone. No afterlife for them. So, I guess, you might be right.

(7,911 posts)We can have no real knowledge of what it's like from the inside. But if we take seriously the thousands of reported "Near Death Experiences" death is like waking up a realizing that what you thought was "life" was only a dream, and the real reality is what comes after.

(5,122 posts)I live with that belief.

(3,695 posts)Making a fine point by clarifying that the real reality is the 'knower' of waking and dreaming, the 'knower' of here, then, there and now, and continues as the 'knower' of what comes after, if there is anything to be known.
This 'knower' is the a-priori, self-evident existent consciousness that does not depend upon the known, but without which nothing can be known.
This non-negatable consciousness has never known itself to be non-existent and can not be negated nor ignored.

(10,154 posts)Painful deaths, it would really suck. In a way it might be good to know its coming, so you can take care of a few things. I wouldnt want my death to be more of a burden than necessary to others, but I guess theyll figure things out. Its kind of surprising that man makes dying such a chore in some ways.

(34,104 posts)The split second between count backwards and are you awake yet, we are done is what it will be like I think. There is nothing there, you are unconscious. It gives me comfort to believe that death is just like going in to surgery only nobody wakes you up.

(16,376 posts)Everyone thinks you simply go to sleep under general anesthesia, but honestly, the anesthesiologist takes you to the brink of death and back again. That's why they sit so close and watch those monitors like a hawk. It's also why the sleep doc usually has the last word on approving the surgery.
I've had several surgeries and have always enjoyed the sensation of going under. Yes, I know I must be a little odd.

Why does it have to be so complicated and painful for the person when we have the technology to make it simple and painless?
