How does Philip Rucker do it?

He's one of the talking heads on MSNBC. I see him on there all the time. And every time, he looks like he hasn't shaved in four days. How does he do that? How is that even possible? If you don't shave for four days, at the end of the first day you look like you haven't shaved since yesterday, at the end of the third day you look like you haven't shaved in three days, after four days you go another day without shaving and you look like you haven't shaved in five days, or you shave and you look like you shaved today. How do you ALWAYS look like you haven't shaved in four days? I don't understand how he does that. Is he looking like that deliberately? Why would somebody want to look like that all the time? I hate facial hair, I think it's gross, but I think he would look a lot better if he would either shave every day like normal men, or just let it grow out. This in-between look he always presents looks ridiculous. If somebody here on DU knows him, please tell him I said so.

1. Ari Melber goes for that look as well.

I think it's supposed to convey that they are pursuing the truth all the time. Shaving falls somewhere further down on the list of priorities.

3. It appears to be some sort of "style" of the time

An attempt to look "casual?" I'm not sure. But the unshaven look has been around for awhile, I remember some Alaskan that Sarah Palin was endorsing went for that "look." And it's not that they're growing a beard or just neglected to shave for a couple of days (except for Ari Melber), but some inexplicable current style choice. I've seen guys on TV shows or TV movies that look that way and I know what you mean. Do they ever completely shave? They certainly look like they need to. I've often thought that when these shows are movies are shown years down the road, people will think it looks mighty strange, like when we see odd hair choices from the '80s...

4. Yes, seen it on several celebrity "men". Women not so much! Lol.

But I too don't know how they keep that look of a "several days growth". There must be a skill to shaving just enough off the top. I actually like it on some men.

6. I loathe the perpetual stubble look

I especially hate it at black tie events! Shave or grow a beard. The stubble look went out with Miami Vice.
