she slaps me and nips my hand, then runs off.

Does not like hugs at all.

But at night, when I lie down to sleep, she rubs my face with hers, buries her face under my neck, and expects to get stroked behind the ears and on top of her head, while she purrs steadily. If I stop, she nudges my hand.

That is one reason why they are far better, and more advanced spiritually than humans. I aspire to be as wonderful as a dog but as humans, we are too flawed.

... because it is something that primates do, not canines.

My dog loves to be hugged. I don't know if it's because he's been hugged since he was 8 weeks old, or because he just likes it. Of course, he thinks he is a primate.

I just don't see how the dogs don't like to be hugged thing is true, unless the dog isn't used to it. Some people aren't used to hugs, after all, and they stiffen up when someone hugs them. Mainly I figure that dogs have evolved over time to be our companions in life and that usually (hopefully) includes being hugged from the time the dog joins the family. My dog loves group hugs, too. The more people in the hug, the better.
