Sometimes Doordash prompts for ridiculously large tips ... and I'm not a cheapskate ...

But I ordered a sandwich, chips, and brownie, total cost was $14.50.

The restaurant is .25 miles from a freeway onramp, and I'm like .4 miles from the very next offramp (the freeway drive is 1 mile, iow). It's literally no more than 10 minutes, if the signals go your way, it's about 7 minutes. Drive is 1.65 miles, with 1 mile of that on the freeway.

Doordash's recommended tip? $4.50.

And I'm sorry but that's out of hand. I changed it to $3.25 cause that seemed very fair. Note also I'm not in an apartment or anything, there's no parking issues at either end of this transportation, nor is there ANY traffic at 4pm on Saturday.

Am I wrong on this?

If I'm a driver I really don't care if it's 1 bag or 2 bags of 'stuff', I care how long it takes to get from A to B, how frustrating it might be or not be, how much time in traffic, etc.

So if I order a $10 thing from 6 miles away (which I very much avoid) I'll tip 'em $5 to bring it. But if I ordered a $100 meal from .5 miles away, I'd probably give 'em the same $5.

I don't really see how the cost of the meal is all that relevant, frankly.

I agree that it shouldn't be the cost of the meal but the work provided. Everyone needs a living wage.

They asked for over 30% tip, a bit much. But folks are struggling out there and all. I think $3.25 was very good tip.

The other night I ordered a couple of pizzas. I put $3 and some change on my card. I looked at the price of the order and saw that they were already charging me $3.50 for the delivery service charge, so I think that was plenty. I usually just give them a five for the tip, but if they're going to put a service charge on there, I'm going to factor that into the tip. $6-7 is a good tip for two pizzas from two miles away.

It goes to the store so you might want to keep that in mind.

for the driver's mileage and other things related to delivery costs. The store's delivery costs are all related to the driver's costs, aren't they? Maybe I need to call and ask what that fee is for. I usually go pick up my orders to avoid all of that shit, anyway. It's ridiculous for a store to charge a delivery fee unless they're using it to pay the driver.

Claiming $8 is 20% on a $30 order. I’m a generous tipper, but I also understand basic math.

They get extra just because they are working at a low paying job and I can afford to tip well. Those people need their jobs and the extra money.

I won't miss that extra couple of dollars, but it can really help the driver who is struggling to make ends meet by doing a job that can't be very pleasant - and is making my life so much easier.
