Spent a day in Provincetown, MA

Up here on the Cape for a short visit. Wanted to stay longer but we only lucked into our room for a few days because of a cancellation. We did the day trip thing to Provincetown yesterday. Fall may be the best time to visit. Beautiful weather and less crowded (although there are certainly crowds). It seems like every other building is an art gallery. Relatively few of the touristy tee shirt shops and the like. The victorian and older houses that dominate the architecture are beautifully maintained. Lots of restaurants with water views.
The entertainment scene seems to be revived after 18 months of Covid. I would have enjoyed staying in town a few days and taking in a bit of the nightlife but my wife enjoys a quieter vacation so we are at an inn in Brewster.
If you are planning an overnight visit book early. It seemed every place had a 'no vacancy' sign out.
Provincetown has the reputation of being the dog friendliest place in America.

2. As I'm sure you are aware, there was an outbreak in Provincetown over the summer.

I guess things have quieted down from that and that everyone in town has done what had to be done.

Has now turned into an advisory. We weren't indoors much but the few times we were we didn't see many masks. None of the wait staffs seemed to be wearing them. I don't know what the dance clubs, bars and entertainment venues are doing, where obviously it's more of an issue.

There used to be an 80 mile Cape Cod Relay race that started at the Plymouth Rock and finished at the tip of the arm in Provincetown. I started running it my senior year in high school. It was usually held on the 2nd or 3rd weekend of October.. We had an 8 man team that changed up a bit over the years but some of us original members ran each year for roughly two decades before they cancelled it over traffic concerns (it had gotten too big). The race started at Plymouth Rock and finished in P-Town. The rest of the team followed in cars as each of us runners got dropped at our hand-off points. I ran the 2nd leg a few times. It was 8.5 or 9.5 miles (cant remember which) and went by the the now decommissioned Pilgram Nuclear Power plant and up the steepest hill on the cape.
However most years I ran the 7th leg a 13.8 mile section that went through Truro and Welfleet. It , as all the rest of the legs, had some beautiful scenery that included some stretches through the dunes.
October is a beautiful time of the year to visit the cape. That race was a unique way to experience an 80 mile swath of it a little differently.

In the later half of the 1970's we lived in Hartford, CT and would go to P-town for a week each year, usually right after Memorial Day just as 'the season' was kicking off.

At the time, friends would stay in town at The Crown & Anchor Inn for around $100 a night
while four of us stayed at the Coastal Acres Campground for $4 a night per campsite. Two of us in a dome tent, and two in a VW van in two adjoining sites.

We roughed it, cooking out on a Coleman stove; rode our bikes around; hit the bars, beaches, and shops; had a ball.
Loved it.

I always wanted to go back years later and ride the ferry from Boston to P-town. Never made it.

Great memories.

Cabaret shows. I read they have a cabaret and a jazz festival during the season. A lot of entertainers from NYC come up for gigs.
Provincetown is very much an arts town.

"touristy tee shirt shops" so I let her browse while I people-watched from a sidewalk bench. Masks were required in stores but not outside. So many adorable dogs parading by me! I really enjoyed the day.

And it was always a friendly little town.

I say 'was' because I'm thinking back to the seventies when we used to go there.

We moved to San Diego around 1981 and I now live in New Mexico.

Where are you vacationing from and how long are you here for? I love this time of year here. The humidity has gone and the air feels nice and crisp. The leaves haven't turned yet this far south, but it's still a beautiful season!
