but I can remember song lyrics from 50 years ago!
How are your music memories from the 50s, 60s and 70?
I did a number of questions (they were for crosswords) of music of the 50s to the 70s for our 50 year class reunion in 2016.
These have been redone without the crossword look for the reunion and are just straight up snippets of lyrics from some of the songs of that era. Some are easy, some arent so easy. The idea is to name the song based on the snippet of the lyrics. It went over very well with the classmates.
These lyrics are from the most popular versions as there were covers by other singers or groups that may have changed a few words. So if you disagree with an answer, it may be that you remember a different artists rendition.
I have 15 of these sheets but dont know whether to post the answers WITH the posts or wait a day or two to add them or dont even know if anyone wants anymore. Let me know what you think in the comments.
It might be best to highlight then copy the questions for printing at your leisure, or to try them out on some friends not on DU.
Of course, you can always cheat a little by looking up the lyrics on bing or google to get an answer. But that does take the fun out of it.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy this little diversion from the seriousness of today.
Music of the 60s and 70s

Sheet 01
01..a time of love, a time of hate, a time of war, a time of peace...
02..if you think you found someone you love for evermore; then it's worth the price you'll have to pay...
03..he's gonna buy me a diamond ring; and if that diamond ring won't shine, he's gonna surely break this heart of
mine...
04 ..I still feel the motion here at home in bed..I tell you it's hard for me to stay away; you ain't been till you...
05 ..you smiled at me and really eased the pain; now the dark days are gone and the bright days are here...
06 ..the smile from your lips brings the summer sunshine; the tears from your eyes bring the rain...
07 ..close your eyes girl; look inside girl; let the sound take you away...
08 ..people talking without speaking; people hearing without listening; people writing songs that voices never share...
09 ..I guess I'll go on home, it's late; there'll be tomorrow night, but wait..what do I see...
10 ..each time I saw him I couldn't wait to see him again; I wanted to let him know that he was more than a friend..
11..when she gets there she knows, if the stores are all closed, with a word she can get what she came for...
12 ..is it just for the moment we live?
13 ..if you love her then you must send her somewhere where she's never been before...
14 ..It's right that I should care about you; try to make you happy when you're blue...
15 ..it's written on the wind, it's everywhere I go; so if you really love me, come on and let it show...
16 ..ooh never leave me, please don't deceive me, I want you only, you must believe me...
17 ..but you're my teenage queen; ooh you're the prettiest, lovliest girl I've ever seen...
18 ..with all the charms of a woman, you've kept the secret of your youth...
19 ..down by the river that flows by the coalyards; stand wooden houses with shutters torn down...
20 ..he drinks whiskey Pancho drinks the wine...
21 ..when it's cold outside, I've got the month of May...
22 ..tonight's the night we'll make history; honey, you and I...
23 ..don't you ever leave me sad and blue; don't you ever tell me we are through...
24 ..each time we part, my heart wants to die; darling hear my prayer...
25 ..so here's to the golden moon, and here's to the silver sea, and mostly here's a toast to you and me...
26 ..look around you; look up here; take time to make time make time to be there...
27 ..she stays, love grows, under my umbrella; all that summer we enjoyed it, wind and rain and shine...
28 ..paint your palette blue and gray; look out on a summer's day with eyes that know the darkness in my soul...
29 ..they think our love is just a growin' thing, why don't they understand, it's just a cryin' shame...
30 ..and the white knight is talking backward, and the red queen's on her head; remember, what the doorknob said...
31 ..I met her in a pub down in old Soho where you drink champaign and it tastes just like cherry co-la...
32 ..who's trippin' down the streets of the city, smilin' at everybody she sees...
33 ..and the woman that she was, drove her on to desperation, and I saw as she went, a most hopeless situation...
34 ..4 of them want to own me; 2 of them want to stone me; 1 says she's a friend of mine...
35 ..they say I'm crazy but I have a good time; I'm just lookin' for clues at the scene of the crime...
36 ..something happened to my heart the day that I met you; something that I never felt before...
37 ..make it simple to last your whole life long; don't worry that it's not good enough for anyone else to hear...
38 ..well you know that it's a fool who plays it cool by making his world a little colder...
39 ..well I'm New York city born and raised, but now days I'm lost between two shores...
40 ..everytime I see your face it reminds me of the places we used to go...
41 ..Oh say can you see my eyes if you can then my...
42 ..such a pretty face should be dressed in lace...
43 ..but how many times do I have to tell you darlin' darlin', I'm still in love with you now...
44 ..I rode my bicycle past your window last night; I roller skated to your door at daylight...
45 ..at last, we're face to face, and as we kiss, through an embrace...
46 ..down at the Jordan..John a-baptising..and savin' all sinners...
47 ..just listen to the music of the traffic in the city; linger on the sidewalk where the neon signs are pretty...
48 ..when I was younger so much younger than today...
49 ..when he got there the conductor told him one more nickle, Charlie couldn't get off of that train...
50 ..you don't know how many times I wished that I had told you; you don't know how many times I wished that I could
hold you...
51 ..she stood there laughing; I felt the knife in my hand and she laughed no more...
52 ..funny, I been there, and you been here; we ain't had no time to drink that beer...

(62,448 posts)I believe that is the Kingston Trio and the Ballad of the MTA
"Oh did he ever return?
Well, no he never returned
And his fate is still unlearned
(oh that poor boy)
He may ride forever
'Neath the streets of Boston
He's the man who never returned"
Thanks for the trip down memory lane

(855 posts)Don't know if any of you saw it but Time-Life did a great 10 part series on the History of Rock and Roll.
I bought a copy back in the late 90s but it's on youtube now in case you're interested (all 10 Parts!)
You' might have to copy the link below as I put it in as a regular link and got the "Forbidden" tag.
If so, just copy it and past it and go and prepare to spend 10 hours amazed. Otherwise, enjoy.
For the whole 10 parts, go to youtube, History of Rock and Roll.
There are a lot of other vids but this may be the best for this genre.
