(102,294 posts)and Make Yourself "BIG" as you confront. Black bears can be scared away. Grizzlies, not likely.
I learned these lessons a long time ago, but fortunately, have never had to use them. But an old hiking buddy of mine did against a grizzly in Alaska decades ago and lived to tell about it. And, this is what they teach you in outback survival training--as well as those training to be Park Rangers.

(17,444 posts)I'd yell and wave my arms and head back inside. Some times that was enough. Rapping on the window with a spoon would almost always work. There was one that I had to head back out banging on a pot and yelling, but it hurried away.
I put an electric fence charger on the garbage cans and the bird feeders and they quit coming by.
I'll bet that bear hustling up that tree was trying to get away from me.

Have bear spray, use it on any bear that comes close, even when they seem to be curious... hose them with the spray so they know you're a fucking nightmare and to get away from you.
Great GIF that shows this. Both Griz and Black bears climb trees better than you. If they feel it's worth it, calorie-wise, to come fetch you out of the tree they will. If waiting for you to come down is more energy efficient, they'll wait you out. Every food eval for them involves cost/benefit analysis.

He was warned that there were bears in the area, and if he had to escape climb a tree that was tall, but limber, that wouldn't hold the weight of the bear. So off he goes, pretty much to the middle of nowhere, and right away, here comes a bear. The guy climbed a limber, flexible tree. The bear shook it and rubbed against, but had no luck loosening the guy's hold on the branches. The bear dropped down to the groend and walked away. The guy took a breath, and waited a few minutes. To his dismay, the bear came back with another bear. Both bears vigorously attacked the tree, shaking it, putting their weight against it, but again failed to dislodge the hunter. Both bears left, and once again, the guy sighed with relief, and again decided to wait. In a few minutes the 2 bears came back in sight. The guy smiled slightly, until he saw the beaver
