(4,661 posts)Nice costumes too. I was sorry/not sorry when we ran out of candy. I had already eaten enough for eight toddlers in dinosaur suits.

(25,862 posts)I decided not to give out candy this year. In years past very young children would show up before sunset. This year no one was that early, and when I look out the front windows I've seen very few kids.
I am mostly tucked away in my back computer room.

(7,633 posts)We didnt buy candy either because I didnt want it around afterward as Id be sure to eat it. We debated buying some crap candy and not the usual Kit Kats but glad now I didnt.
People were hesitant before but I think Covid pretty much killed it
this year.
Sad really.

(17,444 posts)A little cute Minnie Mouse who seemed confused as to what she was doing and a Batman who knew more. I recognized the father who I've said good morning to as he heads up the hill past our house. They came after dark.
I saw an organized group with some adults shepherding them on what appeared to be planned stops much earlier maybe 4 pm. I heard some Spanish directions from the adults.

(11,296 posts)It was like a Twilight Zone episode, I thought I heard kids and thought back to the days my kids and others hit the street. Mostly retired on it now, in a few years another generation will be back at it, I hope I see it. I miss seeing them.

(16,846 posts)I've been living here for a little more than 3 years now. My parents live in a very nice neighborhood, and they told me today that they always get inundated with them. They told me that van loads of them get dropped off in their neighborhood.
When I was a kid, we went trick or treating in our own neighborhoods. Today they send all the kids into the affluent areas. Seems that Halloween these days is only about acquiring as much candy as you can. That's a shame, because it used to be a great holiday for kids to play make believe and run around with their pals. Seems like people today are sucking the soul out of all of our holidays.

(22,037 posts)Actually, we didn't really expect any trick or treaters. Our house is in rural Pennsylvania where everyone has long driveways so it's not conducive to walk door-to-door. We gave a couple of bags of candy to the community center where they were planning a party for the local kids. I did carve a pumpkin, though!

(1,603 posts)In 2008, the birthrate started to decline from an already low but steady rate, and has declined by about 1% a year every year since then. Class sizes are getting small enough that schools are consolidating classrooms and closing up unused ones, and school districts have already started looking at phasing out older facilities. There was a small bounce in 2019 and 2020, but I suspect 2021 will reverse the trend. Younger people are getting married later and less often and are having fewer kids (they can't afford large families). This will start impacting high schools next year, and colleges by 2026. My suspicion is that labor shortages are going to become really acute by then.
