Let's celebrate my post number 12,000 with a little Tech Talk!

Here it is November of 2021 and I'm still getting updates for my WIN 7 computer.
That's fine with me since I've been using it as my main computer for some time now.

I'm now using my WIN 10 machine as a backup and when I go to it or my son's
machine to check on updates I'm terrified to see the notice "This Computer Can Run
WIN 11! Get it for free!" I don't think so. WIN 10 is already a step in the wrong
direction, as far as I'm concerned.

I continue to have a mixed response to technological developments. I do love my
puters and the internet but have never wanted a smart phone. Nature and evolution
have provided humans and other critters with arms, legs feathers and fins to get around. Seems to me that cars and planes just bring us bigger problems.

But then vaccines, ground ambulances and Life Flight services are helpful. Obviously I have some things to work out and I'll be tackling that as I move onward
and upward in my post count. Thanks for being here and reading. DU is a big plus
for me too.

As regards Win10, it's pretty good... Microsoft Edge is still rubbish though.

My laptops have SSDs as the main drive, and the 7 year old laptop still boots up in seconds as a result, even with Win10.

Have you thought about SSDs for backup storage ? They're very reasonable now.

Microsoft or HP accounts that they're certain that I need. Meh. But I had to go look
up what an SSD is and that does look interesting. Thanks!

I just built a new computer. My old one is eight years old, running Win 7 Pro, and is simply wearing out. As usual, when I build a new computer, I go with the current most stable version of Windows - which means if I upgrade to Win 11, it will not be for a while. There are simply too many bugs in Win 11.

But Win 10 is giving me headaches. I can't get all my various email accounts set up, even though I am using both Outlook and Windows Mail - between the two programs I have most of the accounts working, but not all and not all in either. It doesn't help that every single time I turn off my computer Outlook stops opening and I have to perform a repair on Microsoft 365 (the program formerly known as Microsoft Office). Every. Single. Time.

I had a terrifying several hours the other day. On my old computer, I had to D: Data drive set up as My Documents in Win 7 and on that drive I had a folder labled "My Documents" that held all my most essential files. I decided to not do this time and simply transferred the two hard drives that held all my data over to the new computer. D: is still D: but when I went to look for "My Documents" it wasn't there.

In its computer logic, Win 10 renamed my folder to "Documents" and carefully listed it in alphabetical order. For hours, I searched for it and was almost ready to move the drive back to the old computer to see if it popped up then. Fortunately, before I had to open up both computers again, while looking for something else (I think the folder labeled "Drives" with info about my hard drives), I found the renamed folder. It is now renamed "Ziggy Documents" so I can find it.

Now I have to finish going through my even older 3TB hard drive and making sure I have copied everything I might possibly need off of it.

I had to go into the default settings and ask Microsoft to pretty-please let me
download apps/programs that were not available on the Microsoft Store or
approved for use by Microsoft. snark alert on: Yes, I've enjoyed WIN 10 so much that
I'm really looking forward to using WIN 11. alert off
