Finally I found out:
Hold your finger on the letter you type
a nice menu of symbols pops up.
I never knew this. Hope it helps someone else.

(3,396 posts)Hold your finger on the letter. Various options will appear above your finger. Without letting your finger off the screen, slide it up to the option you want. For a, I get

(2,431 posts)While holding down alt, type in the code on you numeric keypad. The only one I have committed to memory is the emdash [alt + 0151].
Perhaps you could use character map to make yourself a cheat-sheet.
