I have read that it has been ascertained that the Third Class passengers were not locked in their area of the ship as is depicted in the movie. However, many of them did not grasp the seriousness of the problem until it was too late to escape, and there is a lot of evidence that the crews actions were mostly directed at getting the first class passengers to the lifeboats and evacuating those who had made it to the deck by themselves.
