Ring camera catches cat jumping fence and escaping coyote... Seattle

It’s common these days to see viral videos of people pilfering packages from porches, but an Amazon Ring camera captured a more unusual scene in our side yard in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood this week: our neighbor’s cat leaping for his life, literally, with an urban coyote hot on his tail.

Apart from the drama of the escape, the video quality is quite good. The Ring’s infrared camera captured the scene in black-and-white in the dark, providing a clear and chilling glimpse of the coyote sniffing the ground and assessing the situation after the cat’s narrow escape. Looking at the video, we were surprised — and the cat was fortunate — that the coyote didn’t leap the fence.

---------------------------

For those concerned about the cat, our neighbors report that he was spooked by the close encounter but otherwise alright.

Yep, as it's running away from a coyote in fright, it gets struck by a car. Fla Dem Nov 2021 #10

they stay in the house. Don't worry about coyotes, cars, injuries from other cats and most diseases. Little birdies are safer too.

Our new little girl wants to follow the dogs out. Have to keep an eye out on her.

They know you rescued them.

Initially, she always tried to get out.

For a while, she would seem angry with dog & I wondered if it was because he got to go out.

So I took her out a few times, while it was snowing. (Harness & leash, of course.)

She sliced a fiberglass screen one day, jumped out & just stood there. That was the end of that. No more worries.

Then make the smart decision to keep it an indoor only cat.

I know people who have heard the very terrified and very painful screams of their cats being torn apart by coyotes.

KEEP YOUR CATS IN

It is probably only me but using a scene like that to sell a product makes me cring.

that if you care about your pets, you will keep them indoors. As glad as I am that the cat escaped this time, I know it’s just a matter of time until luck runs out.

If you love your cat (and it's not a rural barn cat) it should be kept indoors. Cats adjust very well to being in doors.
