Wildlife experts say this can happen in an average of one in 10,000 does, making it an extremely rare harvest for the Missouri man.

The usual deer predators are nearly gone in Missouri, as a result the deer population is very high.
And this causes real problems, with deer eating peoples' lawns and gardens, and getting hit on the roads.

So the state has a REGULATED deer hunt, like we have here in Wisconsin too.

...the only predators are cars and hunters.

This has led to a huge explosion in population. If you drive here for a week, you are sure to have at least one situation where you could easily hit one.

I have hit one; it was very frightening. My car was nearly totaled. I've also had a few scrapes and close calls.

Many forests in this area have been severely damaged by deer; it's not just suburban properties. They eat tree saplings; new trees do not survive long, and they chew the bark off of others.

I'm a vegetarian, but absent wolves and Pumas, our wild areas are severely threatened as are, in some cases, our lives. A few years back in my town, a woman and a child were killed when they hit a deer, which came through the windshield.
