I just did 2 days of 6-8 math in a small district at the southwest edge of the sizeable city to our north.
At the end of the day, the school secretary says "Oh, here's something you'll be happy to know."
As of Wednesday (12/1) they are raising daily pay for subs from $115 to $150 bucks.
This is a lower middle income town, but they realized, that the big town paying $145, some schools only BLOCKS away, meant that only the "money don't matter" types like me were willing to take advanced notice assignments. Others truly supplementing their income (like retired real teachers) were willing to leave dates open for $30 a day. And the town is 160,000 people, so there's always going to be last minute needs.
I'm expecting nothing, figuring $16.50 an hour is fine when I have no bigger fish to fry. Suddenly, it $21.40.
Getting a raise I didn't ask for or even expect!
This changes what I give to the food bank from $40 every sub day to $60!
Pretty good day.

(65,058 posts)50-60% of what I get after taxes. For this district, $40 out of a pinch over $70 after taxes. The districts that pay less, means a smaller donation. Now, for this district, it goes up.
They send receipts so I get the withholding on that donation back in February.
Works for everyone.
Probably adds up to about 3 grand a year to the food pantry.
