Nostalgia... combined w/ humor. Llet's face it--1970s special effects just look funny now. Also, we spent a lot of time noting the "plot lines" that showed up in the Airplane movies.
Obviously the best one is Airport '77, but '75 is okay too.
It's easy to see why they stopped after '79, especially since Airplane came out in 1980.

Airport 79 is almost as funny as Airplane!
