George (died 29 April 2007) was a pet dog in Taranaki, New Zealand, that was credited with sacrificing his life to save local children from a pit bull attack. George's heroism was internationally recognised, and he received posthumous awards from New Zealand and British animal charities.

the story of a man who was washed overboard along with a shipmate. I can't remember what happened to the other man, but some time later, I think at least a week, the man arrives ashore, having survived all that time alone without a boat or supplies in the Pacific ocean. He claimed a manta ray saved him, carrying him on its back until it deposited him close to shore. So many improbable rescues!

A wee poodle took on a cougar so his owner and her friend could get away. All he got was a mention on the 6:00 news.

The story of George made it hard for me to swallow.

I still think about that brave little soul from time to time, even though it's probably been 10 years. One ironically good thing...at least it was so vastly outmatched, it would have been over quickly.
