(9,291 posts)its starting to slim out. Does anyone here want to get a card? Private message me an address, and I will mail a card. I understand the privacy with all of this, but so many of us have been here for so long.
Up to you. A little DU holiday spirit would be a nice touch.

(28,820 posts)But I used to make Solstice Cards as that is the real event of this time of year.
Not fake a fake Birthday
Not a arbitrary New Year
They dont celebrate Thanksgiving everywhere.
But the Solstice now thats a real celebration.

(4,517 posts)A music group I am a part of on FB is really tight. This year a Christmas card/gift exchange was suggested. Gift can't cost more than $5 and must fit in card envelope. So far, I have 7 people to trade with, I guess we will see how it goes.

(1,079 posts)It's surprising since we don't send out any. Most of them are from the younger generation, my kids friends and cousins and our friend's kids. I love getting them.

(31,392 posts)I used to send out 80-90 cards/year as recently as five years ago. Then my husband and I separated, and the last cards I sent out were literally right before he committed suicide in 2018. Haven't sent cards since then and have only received a handful each year.
Just finished writing a card to my cousin. Maybe I'll send a couple more this week, but nothing like what I used to do.

(10,009 posts)Sadly, there's a been a lot of attrition due to older relatives/friends passing in the past 5 years, but a lot of people I used to exchange cards with just don't send them any more. I can't seem to end the tradition though.

(3,818 posts)I don't get that many, maybe a dozen or so. I love sending as much as receiving them. There is one DU'er I send a card too. I'll send one to you too if you like.

(6,182 posts)I remember as a young boy watching my mother prepare well over a hundred cards. She would write a Christmas message in most of them...different depending on who she was sending it to.
She sent so many that she would start making them out in November, and kept track of them in a notebook with columns for each person's name, and with sent and received columns for each year.
It was actually a manual version of a spreadsheet; way before computers.

(115,732 posts)I remember years ago when it was a big deal - my mother spent hours addressing cards, and we'd always get a ton of them, sometimes including mimeographed (!) letters bragging about the sender's brilliant children and lavish vacations and we'd always get a good laugh from those. These days it's just email, if that.

(5,260 posts)I exchange with some Dutch friends. They call it my "proof-of-life" card. My father remarried before he died. His wife and I exchanged cards. But I haven't heard from her in a couple years, so suspect she's dead.

(23,690 posts)Probably sent out about 20 this year.

(15,810 posts)And I suspect the other niece will send one out too. Generally we see close family around Christmas and well, all year round.
I did get a nice arrangement from a local realtor. We had her over two years ago when we thought of moving but ended up not moving. Shes someone Ive volunteered with over the years at the school. It is a nice arrangement with a small succulent, orchid and evergreen (all potted) and some decorative items. Better than a card.

(16,172 posts)we don't send out yearly history like some do, but it's nice to see the same names on the mantle at this time of year.
It's sad not to see some names on the mantle too, but such is life.

(9,893 posts)They don't reciprocate much, but I will send as long as I want to. It's sad really. Doing a small nice thing for people is too much trouble. Or something.
What I want to know is do brides and grooms send out Thank Yous anymore? I'm 0 for 2 this fall. The one I had to check my bank statement to see if they had gotten my check. They had. The others I can only assume they got the gift, as I took it to the groom's parents' house as instructed.
