So I Went For My Wife's Christmas Present This Morning

Went to a town around 30 minute NE of my house because a JCP, Kohl's, & Target are right next to each other.
Went to JCP & got 2 nice sweaters & a pair of hanging gold earrings with a couple tiny diamonds in them.
Lady helping me asks if I'm going to use my Penny's credit card. I tell her we don't have one.
She says "If you sign up to get one it's 35% off! And, if I come back by Thursday the 35% carries over.
Thirty-five percent off! Of course, I did it & then went straight to customer service to pay off the amount with a debit card.
Kind of illuminates how great the mark up must be! I got $140 off just the earrings! I forget how much the sweaters were. I'm thinking around $40 each.

Sad, along with all the other iconic stores like Sears, Montgomery Wards, and others (I won't include K-mart as I was never a fan).

It's their mini version. Probably more like the size of a Kohl's.
There's a full size Penny's about another 10 miles north in a big mall in a fairly affluent area.
The Penny's stores that were in the towns 18 miles south & 30 miles east are both closed.
In fact, the mall where that store to the east was is completely gone. It's just a giant parking lot now!

One set of the holes healed over & she just had them redone a bit ago. (I'll guess 5 or 6 weeks)
Seemed a perfect time for new earrings!

Did it all on the card reader. Literally took under a minute. I'm quite shocked at the size of that discount!

I'm making seared scallops with a brown butter cream sauce, risotto & artichoke hearts for Christmas dinner.
The savings will pay for pretty good champagne for both the meal & NYE. (Although for us, that champagne will be consumed around midnight Rome time. LOL!)
Sorry, no kickbacks for you!

...after one has already picked out the products.
I saved over $150 and I was happy with what I was getting for the price I thought I was paying.
I may never use the credit card again, but who cares.
I think she'll be happy with these selections, too. Which is really the whole point.

Just different things at different times. They have some things that are EDLP (Every Day Low Price) but they almost tanked when they tried doing that for everything all the time. People like to think they are getting a bargain.

And my wife. Every Christmas we ask each other what we want, and we both say, nothing. Unfortunately, well fortunately, she has decided she wants to get me a bottle of Jameson's Midleton Rare. This presents an obvious dilemma for me. What do I get her ?

They both advertised huge discounts, but you could go other places and find the same item at a good price without the discount.

I always felt their earrings in particular were overpriced for what they were.
