We were supposed to go to our son's girlfriend's parents' house tomorrow morning. We were there for Thanksgiving, and it was just 8 people - my husband and me, son and GF, her parents, and their son and his wife. Everyone vaxxed and those who were booster-eligible boosted. Our son and his GF have been a couple for 3 years. She is delightful, and we really like her. He's 29 and she is 27. On Thanksgiving, our son took the dad aside to tell him that he wants to ask the young lady to marry him. He got an enthusiastic thumbs up from the dad. He hasn't formally proposed yet, and I don't know when that is going to happen, but I'm glad that it will be.
It was a lovely day.
Different plan this time - an open house with friends and neighbors coming by. The mom, who, like me, is a nurse, said she was pretty certain everyone was vaccinated. My comfort level was being strained because of the potential number of people.
Then, our son called us about 5:30 this evening to tell us that his GF had gotten a call from her boss to report that she(the boss) just tested + for COVID. GF and boss worked together Wednesday. GF has no symptoms. Too early after exposure to test. At least 20 people outside the family are expected to drop in. Maybe more.
We will not be among them. I've been baking Christmas cookies all week, and made a pull apart, and today we assembled an egg casserole as our contribution to the festivities.
We are going to drive there tomorrow morning to deliver the food, and the presents we have for our son and his GF, wave at everybody from the driveway while wearing masks, and then drive back home.
I'm feeling rather bummed tonight. And disappointed that I will not get to eat any of our egg casserole myself - it's one of my favorite dishes.

(6,093 posts)I know it's hard, I haven't seen our family for almost 2 years. It's really hard.

(175,742 posts)Christmas Eve dinner was a wash-out when my niece, who was hosting, came down with Omnicron on Wednesday. We're all vaccinated with the sole exception of my other niece's four-year-old who is too young.
Fortunately, her husband (who is a chef and would be cooking anyway) went ahead with dinner and made deliveries to us all. We're doing a ZOOM visit tomorrow.
Sorry about your messed-up plans.

(34,061 posts)and i think you should save some of those cookies for yourself!
also, i don't know what an egg casserole entails (besides eggs) but i hope you make one for yourself the first chance you get! and then make a toast (with orange juice?) "here's to egg casseroles everywhere!"

(11,617 posts)I hope you saved some cookies for you and your spouse. Another poster suggested making an Egg Casserole for yourself. I would do that if you feel up to it to treat yourself. Stay safe.

(51,611 posts)Sounds almost as bad as my Xmas last year. The worst EVER! None were even close to that horrid experience...all due to Covid. I would go into the awful details but I would end up super pissed off and in tears. Really.

(51,574 posts)You made the right decision, even though it totally sucks to have to bow out.
If your son is waiting until Christmas Day to propose to his GF in front of everyone, he better do it while you're delivering the egg casserole. You should call him to make sure you don't need to arrive at a particular time.
Hope everyone stays healthy!

(54,412 posts)It is now 8 AM Saturday here. We are heading to the Düsseldorf airport where there is a PCR test center with results in 3 hours. It is less than 20 minutes from here by car.
First, they all have to be negative, and second, all our flights tomorrow have to survive uncanceled. If we get stranded in either Paris or Atlanta along the way, it will not be a fun trip. We want to hear it now, or not at all. Definitely not when were hundreds or thousands of miles from either end of the trip. Our daughters and families are heading by car(s) down to the Lake of Constance, across from Switzerland, so theyll be on the road all day. My wifes mom, who is 94, has a designated driver to take her home to her village in northern Germany. And we pack, since our first flight leaves at 6:45 tomorrow morning. Our route goes Düsseldorf-Paris-Atlanta-Charleston. Plenty of places for something to go wrong!
A positive test or a canceled flight leg will toss our plans, along with a considerable sum of money, down the drain, but we have no control over that.
Everyone keep safe and with fingers crossed!
