You wouldn't believe it, but in this well to do suburb, some people don't have enough to eat. (Yes, there are poor
people in the suburb...on very limited income)

Maybe some ideas he likes:
Contribution to the local humane society, or rescues? If his city has a foundation, maybe contribute to that. Public school arts or sciences programs. Red Cross. Local historical society. Scholarship programs (AFS accepts donations for several of their scholarships)
Local volunteer fire departments.
