This species of frog joins four other species of amphibians that were recently also discovered in the Colán mountain range, whose area covers about 40,000 hectares to protect a sample of montane or cloud forests, where clouds are trapped between vegetation.
The research that achieved this discovery is part of the two expeditions that were carried out within the framework of the project Treasures to discover: Herpetofauna of the National Sanctuary Cordillera de Colán Sernanp, financed by Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund and the Environmental Fund of Peru (Profonanpe).
In this regard, Christian Olivera, head of the Cordillera de Colán National Sanctuary, stressed that biological research is a priority for the management process of the protected natural area, and that the report of new species for science positions the sanctuary as an ideal place for the development of scientific activity.
Peru is one of the ten countries with the greatest biodiversity in the world, for having a multitude of ecosystems that are home to hundreds of endemic species and a large part of the animals, plants and flowers that can be found on the planet, a wealth threatened by change climate and human activities.
