this is just a rant, nothing more. sympathy and/or pity or suggestions are welcome... sorry in advance, this is going to be a rather disjointed rant, as i am running on about 4 hours sleep... O_o
i've been working at one of my current jobs for two years now. this job gives me health insurence, which i'm on the hook for out of my checks, honestly it's a small price to pay. anyhoo, i've outlasted 5 GM's and several dozens of employees (it's a restaurant) so i'm one of the more senior persons there. my problem is my new manager. our first meeting was basically a sit-down and threaten session. she told me if i can't perform, she's got plenty of friends she can replace me with. i pretty much blew that off since my job performance has been pretty good. prior to her taking over my store, i got another job through a friend of mine, for more money and a lot more hours than what i was getting.... that said, i had worked out that i'd work the weekends when they need help the most and my other job during the week. to pay for my insurance, i only need around 6 hours a week. my problem is, i get scheduled for 8, but usually only get 4 to 5, since i seem to get cut early.... a lot, to help the store save on labor. i offered my manager a simple compromise... rather than only have me on one shift scheduled for 8 hours (of which i only work 4), two days, i work the lunch shift (10-2), since i usually get cut around 2 anyway it's a win.win....
well, so far, my idea has been ignored and i'm falling behind on my weekly payments... it's gotten to the point that HR had to contact me to see what the deal is... anyhoo... after talking with some of my coworkers this evening, we've come to the conclusion that if it isn't my job performance, my personality, how i get along with my coworkers and the customers... it was suggested that it's because i'm one of the only white people working there. now, i am the last person to even consider that option (for the record, it was my former shift manager that suggested it) however, when i consider the threat that was made when i first met this manager... it makes a little more sense. i thought about complaining about this up the chain of command, but it's going to be pretty hard to prove... given that all my manager needs to do is say "it's to save labor...."
at this point, i'm probably just going to transfer to another store, i worked too long and too hard to be made to put up with this type of crap.
rant over.

(47,675 posts)Her manager is one of her best friends, so it isn't the manager's fault in her case. The next up in the chain demands the cuts to avoid overtime pay. Her manager doesn't have a choice. And yes, it is an hourly position and the main reason she keeps it is for the insurance. If you can get a transfer, by all means do so.
