I assume it does two slices of bread at the same time, with one slice in the front and a second slice on the back(side)? And I am thinking that those two 'plungers?' on the left open the 'cages?' so that the slices may be removed after toasting? Oddly, that displayed slice of toast must have been 'pre-toasted' in order to get it browned as shown?

She was a bit older than my grandmother and they used to spend winters together and when we came to visit we had toast made using that toaster!
