Water cooler chat question

What television show disturbed you the most?
Years ago, I had trouble watching Days of Our Lives when Marlana's evil twin had Marlana committed and stole her life. I don't watch soaps anymore,b ut that sticks in my mind.

What do they call water cooler chat now?

It frightened me as a tot with scary monsters, and later disturbed me in a beneficial way, as good science fiction should, by highlighting some of the dilemmas we face.

It compelled me to think, and I'm better for it.

Twilight Zone, similarly.

I think. The Earth people were beating the crap out of an alien, because evidently the alien couldn't feel pain. It was brutal and that was it for me.

Was binge watching that Dennis Leary series with my wife last year. Then there's an episode where the protagonist straight up rapes his ex wife and leaves smiling. It was so sickening the way it was presented that I was done with that shit forever. I wasn't a huge Dennis Leary fan before but absolutely can't stand him now.

Probably shouldn't come as a surprise. It was intended to disturb. I was days getting over some of those episodes...

I used to cringe as a kid when I watched Lucy and Ricky lying and scheming against each other every week.

I was absolutely mortified when Lucy would show up at Ricky's job wearing some kind of ridiculous disguise and disrupt the place, or plot behind Ricky's back.

To me, their (TV) marriage was totally adversarial and I couldn't understand why they would enter into it in the first place, let alone stay around with a partner that can't be trusted.

Others were Dallas, where JR was a total prick but all the ladies (both on the show and in real life) were falling all over the guy, and General Hospital's Luke and Laura storyline, where Luke raped Laura and it was deemed romantic, and then she married her rapist in a much lauded TV event.

And don't get me started on the movie Grease, where the smart, sweet, gorgeous girl with a bright future decided to turn into a punk so the loutish school bully will date her.

I listen to the True Oldies Channel. A lot of the early rock'n'roll songs are filled with barely veiled threats and stalking themes. The guy bands seem to sing about 'never leave me' and the lady bands seem to sing about 'don't hurt me' Might just be my outlook :/

Now, Lennon's 'Girl' on Rubber Soul was flat out blatant.

Had an episode called Dark Harvest where the main character, an alien, was hunting down school kids and stealing their organs, eating them, and replacing them with appliances. That freaked me out. Not a kid friendly concept.
