Strange experience with the IRS.

We filed last year and sent them a check. They deposited the check. Our records show it's all "on file". And now they have come back to tell us to file again. I don't think we have to send them any money, but they want more filing papers.

We called and they said just to file the paperwork.

I imagine we won't be facing penalties, but is this an attempt to mark us down as filing late?

1. Don't do it.

This is because they’re behind 16 weeks. My accountant said it was unnecessary.

2. My husband said he's not going to refile.

He's just going to send in a copy of the original paperwork.

3. We had a similar thing happen to us

We filed in mid-March 2021. We enclosed our check for the taxes we owed. The IRS cashed the check.

Today, we got a letter saying that we never filed but we have a credit for the exact amount of the check we sent with the return.

I’ll call them tomorrow. I hate IRS troubles.
