The little "wall" that he was backing up on would have *probably* prevented the vehicle from falling off the cliff--assuming a gentle foot on the gas pedal--because once the back wheels would have cleared the wall, the body just forward of those tires would have high-ended (is that the right term?) onto that wall, and the weight distribution would have kept the car from tipping over.
Perhaps the driver was well familiar with that section of road and knew this? Still, you couldn't pay me anything to have tried that.
