(20,776 posts)I met my good friend Eiko-chan from that group. She was staying in San Francisco and we spent a few months together, helping each other out with our languages. She was from Tokyo. I haven't hear from her in a long time. She was better at Spanish than English, because she spent a lot of time in South America, before coming to the States. My Japanese was fair, but she helped me out a lot and I helped her with English, plus she wanted to learn American slang.
I loved her.. she was wonderful.

(4,840 posts)brush up on and refine her English and she teaches me about Japanese culture. We're both busy so there's no pressure to reply every day, which I like, because neither one of us feels neglected if we go three-four days without an exchange.
So far I've had two language exchanges on sharedtalk and both have been positive.
In addition to websites like the one you posted, I use a ton of different apps to learn. That way I can take lessons with me.

(4,840 posts)It's an add on for the firefox browser that interprets Kanji on Japanese web pages and provides the hiragana translation. It's helpful if you forget or don't know a Kanji's meaning or pronunciation.

Trying to decipher Japanese versions of English websites like yahoo.jp I think is another good way to immerse oneself into reading the language because the layouts of the Japanese sites are similar to the English ones so you already have an idea what some of the Japanese kanji links indicate.
