So I almost put my eye out last week...

I walked right into a four foot long metal bale spear on the back of my tractor with the sun shining in my eyes. The tip of the spear thats about 3" in diameter smashed into my heavy glass glasses at the center of my eye and left a huge scrape down the center. They deflected it enough that it hit my cheek and made a large puncture wound. My face bled enough to cover a snow drift in blood giving the appearance that a medium sized animal had bled out into it. I was very lucky...

Of course the next day my eye had a massive shiner as the wound was about an inch from it. HS kids in my math classes were very curious so I told them I gave my wife a brand new set of latex dishwashing gloves for valentines day because her old ones were getting worn out... she didn't think it was as romantic as I did and... POW!

I just told this story here I guess because I wanted to share my joke.

Glad you’re okay.

Funny thing…I asked my husband to get me some new latex gloves this morning. I forgot it was Valentine’s Day. I hope I get them.

I poked a hole in mine, washing hub’s ridiculously large, sharp toothed barbecue tongs.

4. Glad you're ok, and have a sense of humor about it.

Couple of years back was leaving house, was cold and rainy. 3” thick sidewalk was wet, 4” thick driveway was frozen. First step onto driveway feet slipped out, took a good tumble. Lucky I did not hit my head on concrete. My first concern was if anyone saw me, embarrassed.

5. Your description of the blood on the snowdrift is quite vivid.

How fortunate that your eye was not injured.

Your joke to your students reminds me of something a friend made clear to her husband - no appliances for gifts EVER unless it was something she had specifically asked for -

Its happened to me before when your body is in some shock and you cant really feel anything but you see a ton of blood and it freaks you out. Head wounds seem to bleed a lot more. I imagine it may be how a gunshot victim feels at first before the pain sets in.

I coudnt see just how bad it was but all that blood I texted my wife right then once I got it to stop flowing and I said "oh bad news I'm going to be even uglier but not sure how much yet!"

10. Head and facial wounds definitely bleed more than others.

There are copious blood vessels supplying those areas, and even a tiny nick on the scalp will bleed so profusely that it looks like you’re going to bleed out.

I often told moms of toddlers about that so they wouldn’t freak out and be looking for a huge gaping would on their kid’s head when the not-yet=proficient walker would get a bonk on the head and come running to mom looking like something out of a horror flick.

I've worn glasses since sixth grade, and there have been quite a few times they stopped some object from hitting my eye. It's one of the reasons I never really went for contacts. They're such a part of me that I'd feel vulnerable without them.

Drunk injuries always hurt less. But really, I hope you feel better.
