I've got an upright cannister machine with "dual cyclones" and I've tried changing the filters, cleaning the tubes and hoses, and cleaning every hole and nook and cranny in the cannister parts -- and yet the cyclone isn't fast enough to spin ALL the dust out like it used to, so a phenomenal amount of it immediately winds up on the primary filter, dramatically reducing suction. Even cleaning with the wand attachment, which used to pull dirt from several inches away, I now have to be practically right on top of dirt to suck it up. Part of me wants to think I just haven't found the clog in the machine... but part of me wonders if the motor itself may, after 8 years or so, simply be "beyond its useful life." Any thoughts on the matter?

(118 posts)I have a Shark cordless that stopped picking up anything. Was about to throw it out, but looked once more and found a huge wad of dog fur right at the base of the handle (before the cyclone). There is even a button to open it up there that is "to remove blockage".
Never saw it before.

(16,646 posts)From what you describe, I'd suspect a hidden clog somewhere. Such a loss from a worn out motor would probably be detectable in the sound of the motor.

See if someone has posted a helpful youtube video on maintenance for your model.

I've had that problem before.

(6,362 posts)Just yesterday I took my vacuum to the repair place because it wasn't sucking like it used to.
They cleaned it up (it was VERY dirty) but the only "repair" it need was a new belt. It was running, but the belt was slipping and not getting the rpm needed.
