For the first time in my 73 years on Earth, I have hired movers. Do I tip the guys? How much? Thanks.

(3,486 posts)I've moved entire house contents a few times. I hired the moving company to pack my stuff also. I think I probably tipped the packers and movers $100 each at the end of the days (1 day packing, 1 day moving). This was back in 2004, my last time moving.

(46,051 posts)Only a few pieces of furniture and about 30 boxes. One day, for sure. I don't have $100 in cash around. I could probably give each of them $50. Otherwise, it would have to be a check. Maybe I should go to an ATM.

(53,410 posts)They can usually deposit them with their iPhone. And they can go to cash them at their own banks.

Or you could go with some reasonable % of what you pay them for their service.

(31,165 posts)I usually tip the crew chief and let him divide it among the crew. If it's a local move (same crew & truck) I tip at the completion of the delivery.

(46,051 posts)I'm thinking $40 or $60. I'd give them $50, but I only have twenties.

(8 posts)You certainly don't have to, but I think it's a somewhat expected courtesy. Here's an article about it https://threemovers.com/am-i-supposed-to-tip-movers/ that goes over some of the "unspoken rules" of tipping, but it's also from the perspective of a moving company so take that for what you will.

(46,051 posts)I had enough cash to tip the three people I expected $50 each. It wasn't a big move at all. Six guys showed up instead of three. So I gave them the money and asked them to split it. They seemed happy. Thanks for the help.
