...cracked ribs in slip on ice in the Smokies (hiked out 30 miles with the injury)... home resting until I can get back on the trail
meanwhile, such anger and sadness watching the invasion of Ukraine (and the R's support of it)
shelter and fire I made on my last night in the Smokies
edit to add pic of me taking an afternoon in Gatlinburg before entering the second leg of the Smokies (before the fall) great breakfast at "Ruby Sunrise" New Orleans based restaurant there

(22,757 posts)usually I hike approx. 2.5mph... I was down to approx 3/4 mph with every step hurting on the way out
luckily lots of kind shuttle drivers to help out once I got out of the Smokies

(22,757 posts)that night in the shelter, was my second after the fall and it had rained earlier... someone in the shelter before me had brought in branches to dry... it took me about 1/2 hour to get a fire going, I got my sleep system set up, then the torrential rains came and it was so nice (despite the pain) to listen to the rain all night, be safe in the shelter and feel and smell the fire... I savored the experience

(86,765 posts)Cold weather and all that makes hiking with cracked ribs, as you know, very hard.
I've had bruised and separated ribs and had to keep working, though I also know the rigors of a lengthy hike, so I can relate. They take a while to heal.
Glad you made it out safely!
