Born: Margaret Nixon McEathron; February 22, 1930; Altadena, California, U.S.
Died: July 24, 2016 (aged 86); New York City, U.S.
Margaret Nixon McEathron (February 22, 1930 July 24, 2016), known professionally as Marni Nixon, was an American soprano and ghost singer for featured actresses in musical films. She is now recognized as the singing voice of leading actresses on the soundtracks of several musicals, including Deborah Kerr in The King and I, Natalie Wood in West Side Story, and Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady, although her roles were concealed from audiences when the films were released. Several of the songs she dubbed appeared on AFI's 100 Years...100 Songs list.
Besides her voice work in films, Nixon's career included roles of her own in film, television, opera and musicals on Broadway and elsewhere throughout the United States, performances in concerts with major symphony orchestras, and recordings.

Marni Nixon was known as a incredible performer who mainly worked and sang behind the scenes. She was the voice behind songs in many iconic films, including My Fair Lady and was considered America's most unsung singer.

Here's "Tonight" as heard in the released film, with Marni Nixon replacing all of Natalie Wood's vocal. Jim Bryant sings for Richard Beymer. Click here to hear Natalie sing the song herself: {terminated account}/div]

(5,225 posts)This is a painful memory. 50 years ago this week, my mom passed away suddenly watching this movie on tv. She was so excited to see it.

(20,184 posts)When Yul Brynner was making his last tour around the country performing The King and I, I splurged on 2nd row center seats for me and my mother. At the very end of the play when he throws his arms up, my mother burst into tears.
