I decided it was time to have "the talk" with my daughter.
No, not THAT talk! She's in her 30s.
She has lived in Berlin for the last 14 years and loves it. I doubt that she will ever live permanently in the US again.
But I called her today and asked her to game out her plans in the event that:
1) Conventional war breaks out in Europe
2) Putin starts a nuclear war
I told her I don't think either event will come to pass, but if she has a plan in place for both scenarios, she won't panic and react on emotion rather than logic. She is very level-headed and I have full confidence in her, but I felt that we had to have "the conversation."
If a conventional war spreads outside of Ukraine, she will probably be safe in Berlin in the short-term. She will be inconvenienced, but that will be temporary. If it goes on for a while, who knows.
If Putin starts a nuclear war, anyone living in Europe who wants to escape to the US will have a limited time to book a flight and get the hell out. Berlin is west of Ukraine and any fallout will drift towards the east. But we only have to look at the videos of Ukrainians trying to escape over the last week, and Russians trying to escape over the last few days, to understand that there is a very small window for escape.
JFC, I hate that sadistic little soviet runt! All the misery he has cause in his miserable fucking life!
