Hi everyone,
Some of you may recall having read that my dad was found to have 'surprise cancer' late last summer, when he went to the ER really ill and was in surgery just as suddenly. A rare, aggressive form of cancer was everywhere in the abdomen, and it was stage 4. The doctors got a lot of it out, but they couldn't get all of it without killing him. The only hope was chemo, but they were already telling him the best case scenario was a year and to get things in order. He could have sat out and let nature take its course, but he decided he wanted to fight it.
The house has been, needless to say, extremely dark and grim since. We've been a bit at each others' necks at times, and it hasn't been easy for mom or myself, to say the least of dad's own trials. A colostomy, a stent because his lungs filled early on with clots at one point (necessitating another surgery to remove them), etc. Now that his fancy blood test showed nothing and the PET scan lit up no cancer at all, he can look at getting the colostomy reversed and the stent removed! What's better, the chemo that's been making him so sick ends, and he only has to wear a bag of much gentler stuff as a maintenance thing.
His doctor said that he really beat the odds, that by this point, he's usually giving people time frames. It's really such a blessing to the family. Been a long while since we had news this good.
