(3,823 posts)Is my all time favorite author. All time favorite 😍 Not only Grapes of Wrath, East of Eden and Of Mice and Men which are classics. But also Cannery Row and the Pearl and The Red Pony. Even Travels with Charley. His Acts of King Arthur had me completely enthralled as a young man. This letter has raised him even higher in my estimation; something I didnt think possible.

(148 posts)With the exception of "East of Eden." I recently read "Travels with Charley" and was struck by how similar the issues he confronted in the early 1960's are still issues we are dealing with today. The only book of his that I didn't like was "The Winter of our Discontent." I read it in high school, but if I read it now as an adult, my feelings about it may be entirely different.

(535 posts)Steinbeck was also a great geographer. Google "The Log From the Sea of Cortez", read the intro.
It is an excellent description of clear and proper scientific thought (or what scientific thought processes should be).
