OUTLANDER - TV show. Very good but hard to watch sometimes

Last edited Sun Mar 13, 2022, 12:47 PM - Edit history (1)

A married woman formerly a combat nurse in 1946 is at a Stonehenge type area and gets transported to Scotland in 1743. She knows what is about to transpire and is trying to get back. She’s madly in love with her husband.

They just released the 7th season. My wife has been watching since 2014 but wanted to rewatch since they’ve had an extended break. Filmed almost entirely in Scotland and I think their COVID restrictions stopped production for 2 years.

Outstanding acting especially Tobias Menzies who plays two roles. Her 20th century husband and a truly horrific but riveting English Army Captain “Black” Jack Randall. Randall is her husbands great great great...grandfather. The first scene between Randall and Claire (the heroine) is some of the best TV I’ve ever seen. Randall is one of those great TV characters that you will see. Claire is played by Caitriona Balfe who is the mom in “Belfast”. Aside from her and one other actor I think the whole cast is Scottish. They left Gaelic in as some dialogue.

That being said it is a Starz show. The Wedding episode was soft core porn. There is a whipping that is replayed as it is central to two characters stories and it’s very graphic. And then there’s the rapes. At least 5 so far (were in the second season) with little left to the imagination. One of these is an extended presentation between two main male characters.

This must be Starz big show. They’ve done a lot of filming with what looks to be a pretty large budget. Several seasons are 13-16 shows not the normal 10 or so for binge watching.

Murtaugh is a great character.
Rupert and Angus are a riot.
Jenny is great too.

I’d never heard of it until a few weeks ago. Yeah I guess I could see why some guys wouldn’t like it but I find it very well done.

Not much of a book reader anymore. The world is strange enough, no fiction needed.

My wife doesn’t provide any spoilers other than warning me that Randall was only going to get worse. I knew there had to be another traveler but I didn’t guess the first one we find out about. I’m sure there will be others.

I love the costuming part of the show as well as the historical backdrop.

A client couple who I have done period clothing for attended an OUTLANDER themed Ball in Des Moines, Iowa in December of 2018. I did an 18th Century gown ensemble for the wife and a Privateer ensemble for the husband. They entered a Costume contest and won as Best Dressed couple. Who was the Judge? OUTLANDER Costume Designer, Terry Dresbach herself.

Dresbach asked who designed and made their ensembles. They said me and gave her my card. I never heard from Ms. Dresbach. But my clients impressed her, knowing that there is someone who pays attention to detail and knows her costuming history.

The ensembles can be seen here, scroll down...[link:httphttps://www.flickr.com/photos/kathy0552/albums/72157695684458855|

I started learning how to sew when I was 9 by learning how to embroider, progressing to Doll clothes, then my clothes by 11. There were plenty of neighbor ladies who I learned how to read pattern instructions from.

I do not regret that I never taught, nor obtaining a College education. I turn that into what I do for a living and enjoy it. The ideal dream job so to speak. I have clients all over the country.

but the violence was too gratuitous for me. So, I went back to Turkish serials. Even Ertugrul seems less violent ….. which is saying something.

I do find all these time traveling serials fascinating.

They seem to be big among the Turkish serials as well.

Graphic torture and rape are not something I like to expose myself to.
It is not entertaining. The story is good, but she goes way to far!

A rape scene from the victims perspective, her own eyes, was tough. Should it be shown? I can see the yes and the no but the no is probably based on what I’m used to in tv and movies.

use of rape. I tried reading the first book but couldn’t get past that issue.

However, I do like the tv series and of course, every woman I know is in love with Mr. Fraser. There was something appealing about a woman confessing on her wedding night that she’s not a virgin and the groom saying “good, because one of us should know what we we’re doing”.

I also enjoy that Claire has been the most important character in the current season.

They are showing the 6th, not 7th season BTW. There will be a 7th though!

I just finished the 9th book of the 10 book series. The author has alo written side books featuring Lord John. I believe he may get a spin-off.

Try as I might, can't get my husband to wear a kilt.

I have seen every episode from the beginning. There are parts that are so violent I’ve had to look away. The relationship between Claire and Jamie is so beautiful.

The one season I didn’t care for was when they were in France. It didn’t make a lot of sense to me how Claire had such a magnificent wardrobe.
