Roughly speaking, Generation Jones are born between the mid-50s and the mid-60s. Like the older Boomers, they were born during a period of high birth rates and economic boom.
How did they get their name?
The term Generation Jones was coined by social commentator, Jonathan Pontell. The 1970s slang keeping up with the Joneses, or jonesin for short, embodied craving or yearning.
The yuppie members of Generation Jones craved big jobs, big money and big shoulder pads, while another cohort of Generation Jones jonesed for something harder. Maybe its just my experience in an Australian city, but whenever I meet someone recovering from heroin addiction, they seem to be a member of Generation Jones.
Generation Jones celebrities
Barack Obama (born 1961) is Americas first and only Generation Jones president and proudly identifies as such.

(9,258 posts)Was the draft. My brother, born in 1953, changed all his plans around trying to outlast the draft. He went to the local vo-tech school to be an electrician til 12th grade, then decided to go to college to delay being drafted, and thankfully for him the draft ended while he was in college. For myself, born in 1956, my male classmates had no such concerns as we turned 18 in 1974.

(63,221 posts)I never really saw myself as a Boomer, and all my siblings are Gen X and I have more in common w/ them than I do with people who are a few years older than me.
Interesting topic. Thanks!
