My version of the thinker

Practicing on my metal bender I got to incorporate metal into some of the furniture I make. Figured I would do something fun for the yard. It is made out of 1/2 rebar bent and welded together.

1/2 rebar it is used for concrete reinforcement and is relatively cheap a little over 5.00 for ten feet.

We had a half dozen of them that we salvaged from the old church I grew up in before in shut down.

I had to get rid of them after an infestation of borer beetles destroyed them.

Love the sculpture too.

I have 7 or 8 metal garden decorations... I'm just drawn to them. I have one that also uses rebar and another that uses all sorts of different pieces of nuts and bolts and spoons and forks....

What did you use to do the discs down the spine?

I have a garden bed wall that would probably work very well with your Thinker.

Or some such.

Nothing is permanent, especially build with rebar.

Remarkable how some of the very ancient Greek and Roman buildings and roads didn't need these modern building techniques.

In any case - a very evocative piece!

what do you, finally, think?

To rebar or not to rebar?
Can you do anything but stay off of my steel toed toes?
Do your "rodbuster" buddies rib you about it?

Such creativity on your part. Our neighbor made a little shovel/axe pick little guy and puts him out near the road. We all decorate him for each holiday. Beads for Mardi, Easter stuff, sunglasses, hats, etc. But to put that out in the front might invite someone to want to take him home with them. Enjoy your frankenstein.

In my career in construction, I bought a rebar cutter and bender, the kind that lays on the ground.
It is quite heavy and can cut and bend 5/8" bar too. We would cut 20 foot bars into either 3 at 6'8",
or 6 at 3'4", put a J bend on the bottom and put them in the concrete for vertical bars inside the
cells of block (to be grouted). Usually footers for walls have 2 #4 bars horizontally, but I've done some
massive footers with 10 horizontal #5 bars, all wire tied every foot. Ugh.
I've cut and bended thousands of bars. But I don't weld.

I have a electric hydraulic pipe and bar bender I picked up dirt cheap at a estate auction, nobody there knew what it was but it is complete overkill for #4 rebar and slow.

Great job, and even under the harshest environment rebar will stand forever. Burn your name and date onto it.
