Four Masted Barque rounding Cape Horn 1928

Last edited Thu Mar 17, 2022, 01:25 AM - Edit history (1)

"A rare and wonderful part of history capturing a square-rigged ship in full motion.

This incredible film was made by Captain Irving Johnson in 1928, when he was but a swabby before the mast. "

My dad told me that my grandfather talked about wooden ships and iron men. This film gives me a glimpse of what he meant.

Like most of her type, she was used to haul guano in the nitrate trade from the Pacific islands that were practically made of the stuff.

... on SS Moshulu , a similar ship engaged in the "Last Grain Race" of 1938, which he wrote about in the book of that name. Moshulu won, too. Now she's a restaurant in Philly: I had dinner in her one time.
