(17,305 posts)I have been bitten by three different dogs in my life. None of the three times was I doing anything to deserve the attack, all three were Shepherds. They left a bad taste in my mouth and I hope I returned the favor.

(14,846 posts)... who described being attacked by a dog which jumped through the screen of the home's front door. He showed me the many scars where he received stitches. It was a German Shepherd that attacked him.
He'd avoided a prior attack weeks earlier with pepper spray, but that didn't stop the dog the second time. (According to him, pepper spray will only deter a dog attack once. Then they know it's only temporarily painful.)
He eventually picked up the dog and body slammed it to the ground with all of his weight, and the dog yelped loudly in pain as it limped back to the front door. The owner showed concern for his dog, but then shut his front door as if the postal carrier's bleeding wounds didn't matter to him at all.
That dog owner's home was later banned from all postal service.

(22,998 posts)The first one really belonged to a friend, not me, but Duke was a huge friend and I knew her (yes, her) for years and she was so awesome. She did get weird from back pain and dementia late in her lifespan and snapped at Norma, her owner several times and had to be euthanized. Vet said this happens rather frequently with really old full bred Shepherds with terrible backs, they've been overbred too much.
I had a shepherd-x girl (we think the x was coyote) and she never tried to bite anyone in her life. The only person she wouldn't make friends with was my x - just shows how extremely smart and discerning she was. LOL.
I think in general, it's bad people that make bad dogs.

(17,305 posts)They also make bad kids and make for bad neighbors. I am 70 and have always had a dog, I have never had a bad dog. I have had some that were smarter than others, some that were friendlier than others, but I have never had a bad one. I have always loved dogs, I find that they are more dependable than people. For instance, my current Lab mix rescue can always be depended on to get in the garbage if I leave it out, but like Jimmy Buffett, I know, its my own damn fault.
