The return of the "dumbphones"

It's about time dagnabit!
I have never owned a cellphone. I've bought them for my family but I'm part luddite or something-I hate them.

"Seventeen-year-old Robin West is an anomaly among her peers - she doesn't have a smartphone.

Instead of scrolling through apps like TikTok and Instagram all day, she uses a so-called "dumbphone".

These are basic handsets, or feature phones, with very limited functionality compared to say an iPhone. You can typically only make and receive calls and SMS text messages. And, if you are lucky - listen to radio and take very basic photos, but definitely not connect to the internet or apps.

These devices are similar to some of the first handsets that people bought back in the late 1990s."

No apps, no internet, not even text messaging.
It makes and receives phone calls. That's all I need. And it costs me a whopping $18/month.

given that the bus has become unreliable with the long run driver shortages. So that I can keep up with the cancellations and when it is off schedule

Comparison shopping

A backup computer in case my main one is down, including when the power is out (I have a backup battery pack as well).

In general, an away-from-home computer / Internet connection

I like to do that by voice, I like to hear emotion, not see emojis. I have never sent a text message, and I have not suffered from it. It irritates my middle-aged children, but that is OK. That is my job as a senior citizen. They have gotten used to it.

I really enjoy when my phone rings (and it does ring) and my daughter comes one with, "Hi Dad, I have a question."

I use it to talk with people and to send and receive texts.

It's small, robust, and just works.

This is my third cell phone. It's a 4G LTE and replaces a 3G flip phone.

It's already survived a few accidents that would have busted the glass on "slab" phones.
