Winnie the cub

During World War 1, Canadian Army Lieutenant Harry Coleburn bought a bear cub for $20 from a hunter in White River, Ontario. He named her Winnipeg, after his hometown, and smuggled her to England where “Winnie” became the mascot of his regiment. He later donated her to the London Zoo where the son of a local playwright often visited, a boy named Christopher Robin Milne. (Christopher Robin. Hmmm...the name sounds familiar. 🙂 )
