First plane ride since 2019... interesting change

I used to be a road warrior, traveling 70% of the time. I've been on a flight or two.

So as I was settling in for a cross country, 5.5 hour flight leaving after noon, the attendant gave the usual announcements with one big twist.

They would not be serving alcohol or selling food in coach. Wow, ill bet some people were pizzed. I was in business, and drinks and food flowed (though I didn't drink anything alc.).

I wonder if it was a result of drunk covidiots, or if it is just cost cutting? It was a long flight, so the attendants had time to serve. So my guess is covidiots.

I’m sure they don’t mind making the profits on the drinks they sell.

Not sure about snacks. I didn't catch that.

And up front, it was non-stop. Nurse a drink and you go mask free most of the flight. Some did just that.

and he told me the flight attendants wanted them to take masks off only to put food or drink in their mouths, and then remask to chew and swallow. But that was a year ago.

Nearly all the airlines are resuming alcohol service in main cabin. For example, American Air will resume on April 18. These sales have generally been very profitable.

Most airlines are also restoring meals and snacks to pre pandemic levels.

first class

Honestly I don’t fly that often so it’s not terribly expensive.

I enjoy getting a drink when I sit down. There was a time during the pandemic when they would wait until we were in the air to serve the first drink but they seem to have shifted back to when you first sit down.

I think a lot of folks just grab something to eat at the airport. Even in first class, the food isn’t that great. When you fly a multiple leg trip with multiple meals and then do the same flight in reverse, you often get four not-so-great meals.

I rarely fly, even before the pandemic, and if I plan ahead, I can book first class for a fare I'm willing to pay.

I have several times taken Amtrak on long trips, book the sleeper car roomette, which includes food, drinks, and one free alcohol drink with dinner. Nice. The food is perfectly okay, not gourmet, but there are enough choices for me to be satisfied.
