Pretty young for retirement... anyone know the story? (Ashleigh Barty)

World number one Ashleigh Barty has shocked the sporting world by announcing she will retire from professional tennis at just 25.

The Australian made the announcement on social media on Wednesday, calling it "difficult and filled with emotion".

"Thank you to everyone who has supported me along the way, I'll always be grateful for the lifelong memories we created together," she wrote.

She seemed poised for years of success.

As far as I can tell, it's a harsh world to maintain top spots. Ferrets are Cool Mar 2022 #1

I'm sure she has a backup plan. I wish her all the luck.

Lots of travel the whole time. They play pretty much year round too don’t they?

nor will she be the last top young athlete who burns out. Society is asking too much of these talented kids. Parents need to rethink pushing their children in sports and let them be kids.

Her life is still ahead of her. She can do anything she wants.

Sometimes it’s more than just about the fame and money.

It's just that it seems to have come (forgive the sports metaphor) out of left field and I was curious about the back story.

Maybe what you've pointed out is the back story. It's just that the article doesn't say. Maybe she didn't say (and, of course, she doesn't have to).

I'm just curious.
